The Pacman nebula
The Pacman Nebula (NGC 281) is a bright emission nebula in Cassiopeia constellation, about 9,500 light years from Earth. It owes its funny name to its similarity to the legendary video game character Pacman, with dark trails of dust appearing to form a mouth biting the bright surrounding nebula, see my image below.
Home to a cluster of hot, young stars, the Pacman Nebula is an example of a place where new stars are actively being born.
The Pacman Nebula can be #stargazing observed after midnight tonight. You need an O[III] filter on your midsize telescope to improve the contrast and detail of the nebula against the background sky.
To photograph the Pacman Nebula, use a dedicated monochromatic camera for #astrophotography with a H-alpha filter on a telescope that has a motorised mount, and take long exposures, usually between 3 and 10 minutes each.
