This is the planet Venus on May, 3rd 2012 as captured with an apochromatic telescope at 820mm focal length with a Nikon d3100 DSLR. The phase of Venus was 24.3%, its apparent size 39,8" in a distance of 64'000'000 km from the Earth.

The drop is now perfect

In the past, the people though, the drop effect is caused due to the thick atmosphere of Venus. That was wrong.

Venus in the horizon

This is our neighbour planet, Venus having an apparent size of 14" and a brightness of -4.0 magnitudes. Venus was in the Virgo constellation today. Nearly 77% of its planet disc was illuminated. -- Photo stuff: Nikon d3100 DSLR, ISO200, FL=300mm, f/14, t=3s, guided on a Vixen GP telescope mount.
